BURKERT 20137289 Type 2101 Pneumatically Operated 2/2-Way Globe Valve, G 3/4, DN 20, PN 40

BURKERT 20137289 is a complete pneumatically operated 2/2-way globe valve from the ELEMENT Type 2101 series, engineered for demanding industrial on/off switching duties and decentralised process automation. Configured with control function A (normally closed by spring force), this valve delivers bubble-tight shut-off against media flowing below the seat up to 40 bar operating pressure. It features an investment cast 316L stainless steel body with G 3/4 internal thread ports, a DN 20 nominal seat orifice, a wear-resistant PTFE seat seal, and an integrated polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) piston actuator.

BURKERT 20137289 Type 2101 pneumatically operated globe valve

Equipped with a self-adjusting PTFE V-ring packing gland with spring compensation, BURKERT 20137289 maintains stem tightness across thermal cycles from -10 °C to +185 °C. The valve provides a nominal water flow coefficient Kv of 8.1 m³/h and is fully CIP and SIP cleanable. The actuator casing incorporates integrated internal pilot channels, G 1/8 internal threaded pilot ports, and an IP65/IP67 enclosure rating according to IEC 529 and EN 60529, providing resistance against harsh washdown procedures and corrosive industrial atmospheres.

Construction and Materials

BURKERT 20137289 utilizes an ELEMENT series design where the pneumatic piston actuator directly mounts to the 316L stainless steel globe body. The internal sealing arrangement relies on a self-aligning swivel plate that presses the PTFE seal flatly against the screwed-in stainless steel seat.

Lubrication and Hygiene Standards

All lubricants used in the spindle packing gland and actuator mechanism are rated and registered according to NSF H1, preventing process contamination in sanitary, food, and pharmaceutical applications.

Operating Principle and Flow Direction

BURKERT 20137289 operates under Control Function A (CFA) with media entering below the valve seat. In its unpressurised rest state, heavy-duty return springs push the valve spindle and swivel plate downward against the valve seat, keeping the orifice closed.

BURKERT 20137289 Type 2101 flow direction below seat schematic

Applying pilot air pressure between 5.0 bar and 10.0 bar to pilot air port 1 overcomes spring compression, lifting the spindle and opening the path. Because process fluid pressure acts upward beneath the swivel plate, it supports opening and prevents hydraulic water hammer upon closure.

Water Hammer Prevention

Do not use valves configured for flow above the seat with incompressible liquid media. For liquid handling, always select flow below the seat as configured in article 20137289 to avoid damaging pressure surges and pipe ruptures.

Compatible media include steam, demineralized water, alcohols, fuel oils, hydraulic fluids, neutral gases, salt solutions, and organic solvents with a maximum kinematic viscosity of 600 mm²/s.

Dimensions and Mechanical Interface

The valve body features standard female pipe threads G 3/4 conforming to DIN ISO 228-1. The entire actuator housing can be rotated continuously through 360° to orient pilot ports and accessories without breaking the body seal.

Pressure and Temperature Operating Limits

Operating pressure ratings are bounded both by the valve actuator force and the thermal derating curves defined in DIN EN 12516-1 (PN 40) and ASME B16.5 / B16.34 Class 150.

BURKERT 20137289 Type 2101 operating limits and saturated steam curve

Pressure Derating for PN 40 Bodies (DIN EN 12516-1)

Temperature Range [°C]Maximum Permissible Operating Pressure [bar]
-10 °C to +50 °C40.0 bar
+100 °C39.2 bar
+150 °C36.0 bar
+185 °C (PTFE seat limit)33.0 bar
Saturated steam at 185 °C10.0 bar (approximate saturated steam limit)

Ambient thermal constraints depend on the pilot air connection method. With threaded G 1/8 pilot ports, ambient operating temperatures range from -10 °C to +100 °C. If top-mounted pilot solenoid valves or control units are fitted, the maximum ambient temperature is limited to +55 °C.

Installation and Commissioning

BURKERT 20137289 can be installed in any orientation, though vertical upright orientation with the actuator uppermost is recommended to minimize particulate settling.

Tightening Torques and Pipeline Alignment

Clean and flush pipelines thoroughly to remove weld slag, metal swarf, and sealing tape prior to connecting the valve body. Use an open-end spanner on the provided body flats (AF 34 mm for DN 20). Never use a pipe wrench on the actuator housing or valve neck.

Body Connection Tightening Torques

DN 20 (20137289)50 ± 3 Nm

DN 5070 ± 3 Nm
DN 65100 ± 3 Nm
DN 80120 ± 5 Nm
DN 100150 ± 5 Nm

Pneumatic Connection Procedure

  1. Connect compressed air supply lines (5.0 to 10.0 bar) to pilot air port 1 of the actuator.
  2. When operating without an integrated control top, install the supplied porous breather/silencer into exhaust port 2 to prevent dirt ingress.
  3. To reposition air connections, pressurize port 1 with 5 bar air to lift the seat, apply an open-end spanner to the body hexagon, and rotate the actuator housing counter-clockwise to the desired angle.

Maintenance and Spare Parts

When operated within specified media and pressure boundaries, the pneumatic actuator is maintenance-free. Wear is concentrated on the PTFE seat seal, swivel plate, and spindle V-ring packing.

BURKERT 20137289 Type 2101 valve seat replacement procedure

Regularly inspect the relief inspection bore on the lower valve neck. Fluid escaping from the relief bore indicates packing wear, requiring immediate replacement of the packing seal set.
